Live Florence: Eat for the season

Looking for strawberries in winter. Not in Florence.

At home we are used to having whatever we want whenever we want – in terms of fresh produce from the supermarket. Of course we might pay more or compromise on freshness.

In Italy this type of concept is not really practiced, smaller supermarkets and fresh food markets stock seasonal produce only rather than shipping in produce that is out of season.

It can take a bit of getting used to but the upside is the produce tastes amazing. This perhaps is why the Italians refuse to compromise on produce, they have developed a food culture that revolves around seasonal produce. The very concept of making annual sauce, pickling vegetables and preserving meats goes hand-in-hand with eating seasonally.

The central market – Il Mercato Centrale – is an amazing display of seasonal produce and the dining hall upstairs is a great place to indulge in the produce.

So skip the strawberries and indulge in a more suitable winter vegetable.

  1. I read an article recently (can’t remember where now) about why the produce in Europe tastes so much better than in the U.S. and it is because in Europe they keep to the seasonal produce and favor quality and flavor over quantity and durability as is done in the U.S. The difference is definitely noticeable!
